Revelation of John 18

Babylon Is Fallen

1 After these things I saw another ^aangel ^bcoming down from heaven, having great authority, and the earth was ^cilluminated from his glory. 2 And he cried out with a mighty voice, saying, “ ^{▼▼Lit Babylon...fell, fell
,} ^eFallen, fallen is Babylon the great! She ^fhas become a dwelling place of demons and a ^{▼▼Or haunt}prison of every ^hunclean spirit, and a ^{▼▼Or haunt}prison of every unclean and hateful bird. 3 For all the nations have fallen because of the ^jwine of the passion of her sexual immorality, and ^kthe kings of the earth have committed acts of sexual immorality with her, and the ^lmerchants of the earth have become rich from the ^{▼▼Lit power}excessive wealth of her ^{▼▼Or sensuality
,} ^oluxury.”

4 I heard another voice from heaven, saying, “ ^pCome out of her, my people, so that you will not participate in her sins and receive any of her plagues; 5 for her sins have ^{▼▼Lit joined together
,} ^rpiled up as high as heaven, and God has ^sremembered her offenses. 6 ^tPay her back even as she has paid, and ^{▼▼Lit double to her}give back to her double according to her deeds; in the ^vcup which she has mixed, mix twice as much for her. 7 ^wTo the extent that she glorified herself and ^xlived luxuriously, to the same extent give her torment and mourning; for she says in her heart, ‘ ^yI sit as a queen and I am not a widow, and will never see mourning.’ 8 For this reason ^zin one day her plagues will come, ^{▼▼Lit death; i.e., a particular kind of death}plague and mourning and famine, and she will be ^abburned up with fire; for the Lord God who judges her ^acis strong.

Grief over Babylon

9 “And ^adthe kings of the earth, who committed acts of sexual immorality and ^aelived luxuriously with her, will ^afweep and mourn over her when they ^agsee the smoke of her burning, 10 ^ahstanding at a distance because of the fear of her torment, saying, ‘ ^aiWoe, woe, ^ajthe great city, Babylon, the strong city! For in ^akone hour your judgment has come.’

11 “And the ^almerchants of the earth ^amweep and mourn over her, because no one buys their cargo any more-- 12 cargo of ^angold, silver, precious ^{▼▼Lit stone}stones, and pearls; fine linen, purple, silk, and scarlet; every kind of citron wood, every article of ivory, and every article made from very valuable wood, ^{▼▼Or brass}bronze, iron, and marble; 13 cinnamon, ^{▼▼Gr amomon, an Indian spice plant}spice, incense, perfume, frankincense, wine, olive oil, fine flour, wheat, cattle, sheep, and cargo of horses, carriages, ^{▼▼Lit bodies}slaves, and ^ashuman lives. 14 The fruit ^{▼▼Lit of your soul’s desire}you long for has left you, and all things that were luxurious and splendid have passed away from you and people will no longer find them. 15 The ^aumerchants of ^avthese things, who became rich from her, will ^awstand at a distance because of the fear of her torment, weeping and mourning, 16 saying, ‘ ^axWoe, woe, ^aythe great city, she who ^azwas clothed in fine linen and purple and scarlet, and ^{▼▼Lit gilded}adorned with gold, precious ^{▼▼Lit stone and pearl}stones, and pearls; 17 for in ^bcone hour such great wealth has been laid ^bdwaste!’ And ^beevery shipmaster and every ^{▼▼Lit one who sails to a place}passenger and sailor, and all who ^{▼▼Lit work the sea}make their living by the sea, ^bhstood at a distance, 18 and were ^bicrying out as they ^bjsaw the smoke of her burning, saying, ‘ ^bkWhat city is like ^blthe great city?’ 19 And they threw ^bmdust on their heads and were crying out, weeping and mourning, saying, ‘ ^bnWoe, woe, the great city, in which all who had ships at sea ^bobecame rich from her prosperity, for in ^bpone hour she has been laid ^bqwaste!’ 20 ^brRejoice over her, O heaven, and you ^{▼▼Lit holy ones; i.e., God’s people}saints and ^btapostles and prophets, because ^buGod has ^{▼▼Lit judged your judgment of her}pronounced judgment for you against her.”

21 Then ^{▼▼Lit one}a ^bxstrong angel ^bypicked up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying, “So will Babylon, ^bzthe great city, be thrown down with violence, and ^cawill never be found again. 22 And ^cbthe sound of harpists, musicians, flute players, and trumpeters will never be heard in you again; and no craftsman of any craft will ever be found in you again; and the ^ccsound of a mill will never be heard in you again; 23 and the light of a lamp will never shine in you again; and the ^cdvoice of the groom and bride will never be heard in you again; for your ^cemerchants were the powerful people of the earth, because all the nations were deceived ^cfby your witchcraft. 24 And in her was found the ^cgblood of prophets and of ^{▼▼Lit holy ones; i.e., God’s people}saints, and of ^ciall who have been slaughtered on the earth.”
